The Criminal Court has given a 40-year jail sentence to a man who raped a minor and filmed it.
The Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) charged Mohamed Shazleef from Laamu atoll, Kalaidhoo, with rape and making child pornography. He was found guilty of both charges, each carrying a 20-year sentence.
In January 2018, Shazleef took a 17-year-old girl into the islands' woods, raped the girl, and videotaped it.
The Criminal Court’s verdict stated that the two years and one-month the perpetrator spent in remand will be deducted from his jail sentence.
Sexual offences against minors are serious indictable offences carrying heavy punishment under the Maldivian penal code.
