Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) on Monday, revealed that Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla visited former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in Maafushi Prison.
Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu also joined the Minister during the visit to assess prison conditions.
No further details were shared.
The former president was recently admitted for three-days, undergoing heart-related medical tests at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
MCS' spokesperson confirmed that Yameen was discharged last weekend and transferred back to prison.
Criminal Court sentenced Yameen last November to five years in prison and a fine of USD 5 million, on money laundering charges related to the embezzlement of MVR 3.3 billion from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).
Following his imprisonment, the former president has claimed that his medical complications require treatment from abroad, as advised by his doctors. Therefore, the judges' bench asked Yameen to submit the relevant documents to court for review.
The former president had also requested to be released on bail until the end of his appeal, which the High Court denied.
