The government on Thursday, August 24, announced to grant license to Billionaire Elon Musk founded Starlink high speed internet project.

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology extended invitations to the media on Thursday morning to attend the special event to grant ISP license to Starlink. The event is scheduled for Thursday afternoon, although specific details about the event have not been disclosed at this time.

Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla and SpaceX, as well as the current owner of Twitter, introduced Starlink services with the aim of providing affordable high-quality internet access worldwide. Initially, the service was expected to be available in the Maldives by February 2021, but the launch was postponed to facilitate discussions between the government and SpaceX.

The Minister of Environment, Climate Change and Technology Aminath Shauna held discussions with SpaceX in 2022 towards launching the services in the Maldives.

“Discussions are ongoing. SpaceX has requested not to disclose the information until the discussions are completed,” Minister Shauna said earlier.

Currently, Starlink's high-speed internet service is available in a total of 50 countries, encompassing regions such as Europe, North and South America, Australia, and New Zealand.

SpaceX's Starlink internet service offers speeds ranging from 50 to 150 megabits per second. In 2022, the service was upgraded to provide internet speeds of up to 300 megabits per second.
