State Electric Company (STELCO) announces the utility provider's plans to build the largest powerhouse in the Maldives in the upcoming year.

The powerhouse unit will have the capacity to produce 100-megavolts of power.

Speaking during an interview on Public Service Media (PSM), the Managing Director of STELCO Ahmed Shareef affirms the company is currently attending technical formalities prior to the project.

Shareef also mentions the company working closely with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology for collection of relevant technical information related to the project.

STELCO is currently seeking a consult for the project.

The utility provider's front man also affirms completion of the powerhouse will not put any immediate requirement for power-output increase until 2030.

While speaking about the project, Shareef also remarked available opportunity for interested candidates to submit proposals once the financial model of the project is determined.

The project is set to commence to start during the first quarter of 2023.

The largest powerhouse in the country will reportedly be constructed next to the "Fifth Power Project" outlet in Hulhumale' Phase I, which is currently the largest powerhouse with an output capacity of 50-megavolts.

STELCO's decision for an even larger powerhouse comes from its commitment to cater to the growing population in Greater Male' Region, and the expected new population in Phase II.
