Arabiyya School's new building construction has commenced at a price of MVR 85 million.
Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Company (RCC) has been awarded the contract to complete the new building of Arabia School with a reduced price.
The administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih awarded the contract to Amin Construction initially on 29th September 2022 to construct the Arabiyya School building on the land where Jamaluddin School was previously located at. The project was to be completed in 420 days for a price of MVR 168.5 million.
Although it was initially planned to begin the school project within the first 100 days of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's administration, it was delayed due to having to spend an extra MVR 83 million, which the government wanted to save, said Education Ministry.
Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu told Mihaaru News last Tuesday that an agreement has been signed with RCC to proceed with the project. He also said that had the government decided to spend the extra MVR 80 million and not delay the project, they would have fulfilled the pledge to commence the school's construction with in the first 100 days of the government. However, since it was a matter of public funds, they decided against it, he said.
"Today we signed with a new contractor. That is for MVR 83 million lesser than the previous agreement's price," he said.
Arabiyya School's new project was awarded to RCC for MVR 85 million.
As the area where the previous government decided to build Arabiyya School is a very congested and busy space, President Muizzu changed the location of the new building to lot 381, which used to be the former waste dump site. President Muizzu has allocated the plot as the permanent land of Arabiyya School.
