The Parliament, on Tuesday, approved Dr Mohamed Zahir for the vacated seat at the Elections Commission (EC), with the vote of 37 parliament members.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had chosen Zahir as the ideal candidate for the position and forwarded his name to the Parliament for approval, upon which the Parliamentary Committee on Independent Bodies had vetted him and voted in favour of his appointment.
Dr Zahir holds a PhD in Public Administration and previously had filled the post of Elections Voter Education Director, in addition to working as a senior lecturer at the Maldives National University (MNU).
Prior to being approved as a board member at EC, he was serving as the Human Resource Director at the commission.
The EC seat Zahir was chosen to fill was vacated upon the resignation of Ahmed Akram, following an investigation launched against him by the relevant parliament committee due to accusations levied against Akram by EC staff.
