President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced that he will increase the allowance for the elderly.
The President, who is currently on a visit to Addu City, also said that he would soon announce an increase in the allowance for people with special needs.
President Solih said that the next step is to increase the allowance currently being paid to the elderly.
“Hopefully, that [allowance for the elderly] will also change for the better,” he said.
While he did not provide details about the changes, President Solih stated that they will be included in the manifesto for his next term.
The allowance for the elderly was initially introduced under former President Mohamed Nasheed's administration at MVR 2,000 per month. It was later increased to MVR 5,000 during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration.
President Solih emphasized that promoting peace and harmony is crucial for the progress of the country and expressed his commitment to addressing social issues on of his key priorities for the next five years.
