"We will cultivate a love for knowledge and reading, and, God willing, establish a branch of the National Library in every island across the Maldives," President Muizzu said.

The foundation stone of the National Library of Maldives was laid on July 12, 1945, by Mohamed Ameen Didi, who was the head of the Education Department at the time. The building was inaugurated as "State Library".

The establishment was officially renamed the "National Library" in 1982.

In 2008, efforts were made to open a branch of the National Library in Bondage, Addu City, Maradhoo.
