A fire broke out in Fiyoaree School, in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll on Sunday.
An official from the school told Mihaaru that a building on the school’s premises caught fire due to an electrical issue.
He said that it was an old building, but that it was still used for teaching. There were five classrooms in the building.
The Ministry of Education stated that no one was hurt in the fire as it took place in the evening when no one was at the school.
There are 180 students enrolled in the Fiyoaree School. The school grounds are also used to host functions and carry out other events.
"The whole building has burned to the ground," the official from the school said.
The ministry stated that it would ensure that classes are held on time and that students are not inconvenienced.
According to the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF), the closest fire station is located in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, Thinadhoo, which is 45 minutes away on a boat. Meanwhile, the police officers and soldiers on the island also attempted to put out the fire.
The education ministry said that the cause of the fire will be investigated with assistance from MNDF.
