MVR 3.8 million disbursed as disaster relief aid last year

Revealing that expenditure on financial assistance for natural disasters stood at MVR 3.8 million last year, NDMA reported that the most number of cases reported to the authority were fire incidents.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has revealed that MVR 3.8 million has been disbursed in aid for multiple disasters that occurred last year, according to their annual report.

The report stated that 184 disasters had been reported to the authority in 2023. Among these, the highest reported cases were fire incidents, with 95 such cases being reported to the authority.

The second highest number of reported disasters last year were cases of flooding due to heavy rain. While 54 such cases were reported, the majority of these reports were from Male' and Addu Cities.

The report highlighted that 295 households in 12 atolls had reported damages last year, and MVR 3.8 million had been disbursed to 281 of these households in aid. These financial assistance include humanitarian aid, compensation for damages to household goods, and compensation for damages to property.

The highest amount of aid was offered to compensate for damages to property and buildings, totaling MVR 2.7 million.

Moreover, the authority stated that 1,450 persons were affected in various ways by the disasters reported last year.

Following the establishment of a new regulation on the provision of humanitarian aid and compensation for losses caused by disasters to families, the financial aid provided by the state to overcome such disasters has also been increased on Wednesday.
