Several local colleges have announced the decision to collaborate with the government to provide free undergraduate degrees to local students.
Maldives National University (MNU), Villa College, Clique College, Cyrex College and Avid College signed an agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education to join the state-sponsored program that was initiated on February 14.
Tuition costs will be covered for students who apply to courses in MNU and Islamic University of Maldives (IUM), which are both managed by the government. Meanwhile, 40-99 percent of tuition costs will be covered for students who decide to complete their degrees in private institutions.
Students who participate in the state-sponsored courses must work in Maldives for a period of 1-5 years after completing their degrees. Students who have already begun studying for their degrees are also free to apply for the government-funded programmes.
The government estimates that 9,000-10,000 students will commence their undergraduate degree within the year.
