Maldives Police Service has recovered over MVR 10,000 which was stolen after hacking into an individual's Facebook and Viber accounts and impersonating them.

Police said the case in which the perpetrator took control of the social media accounts, and impersonated the owner of the accounts to scam people out of money, was reported to the agency last Friday.

Police said the funds were recovered within six hours of the case being reported, thanks to the collaborative effort between Henveiru ward's police station and the cyber centre.

The agency said they identified the owners of three accounts where the funds were deposited to, and that a total of MVR 10,700 was recovered.

An apartment was also searched in connection to the case, and ATM deposit slips, cash cards, as well as Dhiraagu and Ooredoo sim cards were also recovered from the location.

Although the case is under investigation, no arrests have been made in connection to the crime yet.
