Maldivian student from Seenu Atoll Hithadhoo's Hiraa School departed Maldives on Sunday to participate in COP 27, one of the largest international summits on environmental conservation, held in Egypt.

Aisha Sara Ahmed, a tenth grade student, was given the opportunity to participate in the COP summit because she won the Zayed Sustainability Prize by the UAE.

Vice Principal of Hira School Hawwa Zareena said Sara will be representing Zayed Sustainability at the COP Summit. It was the organization that picked the student.

The Zayed Sustainability Prize is awarded in the name of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder of the UAE.

In a ceremony held in UAE in January, Hira School won that award in the category of South Asian High Schools.

Zareena said the school was incredibly honored that one of their students was participating in an environmental summit of this scale. She notes that this is a great success for a school that was opened only 11 years ago.

The COP Summit is a meeting between leaders, organizations and business leaders of countries, various organizations and businesses to work, encourage and negotiate the finance needed to reduce emissions, expand adaptation efforts, and reduce environmental impacts. Vice President Faisal Naseem will lead the Maldivian delegation to the summit.
