A fire erupted in the Industrial Island of Thilafushi sometime on Wednesday, September 21. The fire originated at the island's waste yard.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) has confirmed the authority's second squadron of Male' area Coastguard were active at the site.

MNDF clarified receiving the report sometime during Wednesday afternoon. Officers dispatched to the site were successful in controlling the flames, however the area was covered in thick smoke.

Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO), that manages waste in the island, reported the flames originated from the temporary disposal ground.

The corporation's statement cautioned of persisting thick smoke for at least a week's duration despite the controlled fire. Images shared by MNDF indicate a large portion of the waste yard had been burned into ash owing to the huge fire.

This marks the first incident of fire in the industrial island after waste extermination by fire was put to halt in October 2021. The industrial island shifted towards more contemporary disposal techniques after WAMCO decided to cease waste incineration.
