Forty-nine judges from the Maldives on Sunday departed to Bophal, India for a five-day customised training and capacity building programme at the National Judicial Academy of India (NJAI).
The programme was initiated under an MoU signed in 2020 between NJAI and the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) of Maldives. This is the first training programme for Maldivian judges held at the NJAI campus in India.
Participating judges include two high court judges, 14 superior court judges, and 33 magistrates from different atolls. Six female judges are also taking part in the training programme.
The programme will run from 12 – 16 December, 2022 and cover sessions on Indian judiciary, constitutional vision of justice, elements of judicial behaviour, judging skills, court management and case management, and re-energising judicial processes through ICT.
The President of the JSC, MP Hisaan Hussain, encouraged all participants to take the opportunity "to learn and have meaningful and constructive conversations that open [their] eyes to new perspectives," the JSC’s statement read. She made the remark at an official sending-off ceremony held for the judges on 8 December, 2022.
The members of the JSC, judges, and senior officials from the Indian High Commission in the Maldives and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed their gratitude for these capacity-building opportunities.
This is the first initiative launched as a result of the MoU signed between JSC and NJAI. According to the Maldives' judicial oversight body, the two institutes are currently collaborating to process applications for the second batch of the training programme, which is tentatively scheduled for February 2023.
NJAI is an independent society established in 1993. It provides training to the Indian judiciary and facilitates training for neighbouring countries such as Myammar and Bangladesh.
