Criminal Court imposes fine of MVR 144,000 and a nine day jail sentence over man responsible for causing an accident that lead to loss of eyesight of the other person in the accident.

Six years ago, in 2016, two motorcycles collided in Boduthakurufaanu Magu of Male' when one cycle attempted to overtake the other cycle. The person that attempted to overtake the other cycle did not have a motorcycle license.

The person on the other motorcycle lost their eyesight from one eye permanently.

In the ruling made by Criminal Court last week, they said the man that had driven without a license was an act of carelessness and that crossing the lines painted on the road was illegal, which was apparent from witness statements.

Even though he was found guilty of assault, he was given a lowered sentence as the case had been delayed due numerous reasons. Instead of the allocated one year and seven month jail sentence, he was sentenced to jail for nine month and 18 days.

The sentence was commuted to a fine because he does not have a criminal background. The nine-month sentence is commuted to a fine of MVR 144,495. He was ordered to pay the money to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) within 12 months.

He was sentenced to nine days in prison after the time he had previously spent detained was reduced from the remaining 18 days.
