Sex tapes used in attempted blackmail of MVR 10 million

Mihaaru news reported on Monday that the sex tapes circulating on social media had been used in a blackmail attempt, to be sold for MVR 10 million.

While a number of videos have been leaked online showing men having sex with a foreign men, Mihaaru news have reported multiple more unreleased videos still exist. Allegedly, politicians, business owners, and men in high level positions in government institutions are amongst those that appear in the videos.

While blackmail attempts have been made to sell the videos for MVR 10 million, it has not been confirmed whether they were sold at this price though.

However, police have confirmed they have been investigating blackmail cases submitted to them since the last week of March. In a press conference held on Monday, Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz confirmed they had identified the blackmailers.

Photographs of former Parliament member Mohamed Nasheed (Colonel) was leaked on Monday as well. He has said attempts were made to blackmail him using photos and videos of him. A price of USD 200,000 was attempted to be extorted from him.

The videos circulating include a video the Speaker of The Parliament Mohamed Nasheed's younger brother Nazim Sattar allegedly having sex with a foreigner and a photo of South Henveiru MP Hussain Shaheem.

Nazim's passport has been withheld and the case is under investigation. Police are also investigating the case of MP Hussain.
