The sudden torrential rain Male' faced early Wednesday morning halted travel within the Greater Male' Area.
The weather appeared downcast since dawn, and the the downpour started around eight in the morning, when most civil servants would be heading to their workplace.
The wind that accompanied the heavy rains paused travel within Male' momentarily, causing several people to wait with their motorcycles on the Sinamale' Bridge until it passed. The strong wind had caused some motorcycles in parking zones to fall over as well.
This caused a momentary disruption in air travel as well. Some flights had to be diverted and spent some time in air, being unable to land in Velana International Airport (VIA).
Maldives Meteorology Service said this was not an unusually strong wind. However, the wind speed in the clouds were at 40 miles per hour.
They also said the heavy rain would last until the end of the day. They have now issued a White Alert from Lhaviyani Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll until five in the evening.
They cautioned thunderstorm, along with heavy rains and rough seas.
