Criminal Court ordered three men to be detained until their trials are over on Wednesday. They were arrested in relation to a case where 119kg drugs were seized in a bust.

The state is pressing charges against Ali Zubair, Ahmed Sunain, and Allora Ahmed Mujaahidh from Gaafu Alif Hoandedhoo.

In December 2021, police was able to seize 119kg of drugs after stopping a taxi, and then from another car and motorcycle related to the case.

In the hearing held yesterday, the state said they had more than enough information to ensure the charges against them stick. They have footage of Sunain and Zubair buying bags and boxes to store the drugs while one of the cars that had been used to transport drugs had documents relating to Mujaahidh. They have additional footage of Zubair making a trip to Tree Top Hospital in the car as well.

Mujaahidh's lawyer Sheena Mohamed said the car where the drugs were found does not belong to Mujaahidh. They also said the state had not said why Mujaahidh was using the car, nor that he was in it when the drugs were found in it. Sheena said that even if they found documents relating to Mujaahidh in the car, they cannot connect Mujaahidh to the drugs found in it.

She said that although the police had previously said that they would look into the owner of the car, the state had not submitted a document identifying its owner.

Zubair and Sunain's lawyer Ibrahim Shiyam said the while the state's documents say the taxi driver is a accused of being connected to the case, they had also submitted him as a witness. However, the state said that they found out he was not connected to the case when they investigated it further.

Judge Dheebana Fahumee said as the state had submitted enough evidence to accuse them, they will be detained until the trial is over.

She ordered the three men who were under police custody to be transferred to the remand prison until their trials are over.

Zubair and Sunain involved in this case had been previously involved in a drug case involving 9kg of drugs. However they managed to escape the charges pressed against them.
