Maldives Police Service announced the decision to dispose of narcotic substances confiscated during investigations and special operations within a month of seizure.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz revealed to local media outlet Mihaaru that a considerable amount of confiscated narcotic substances would be disposed of within the month.
According to Riyaz, narcotic substances in excess of the legally permissible amount for investigations would be eradicated following an audit into the matter.
Riyaz also said that the police would aim to dispose of confiscated drugs within a month in the future.
As per the Narcotic Drugs Act, the police may keep a certain amount as samples until the conclusion of the trial.
The police have intermittently disposed of confiscated drugs. However, a sizeable sum, including substances confiscated ten years ago, remains.
A recent operation resulted in the confiscation of 149 kilograms of drugs found buried in an uninhabited island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The police have also seized drugs during raids conducted in the capital city of Male'.
