The Criminal Court has yesterday placed a couple accused of bringing drugs into the country on 15 days custodial remand.
The couple, a 27 year old male and 20 year old female, was arrested after discovering drugs in the luggage they were carrying when returning to the Maldives after travels abroad.
As detailed in the court order, six packets of illegal drugs were found in their luggage. The packages weighed 994 grams, the order quoted investigative reports from the police.
Additionally, results of a urine test indicated the man positive for use of COC, THC and benzo.
At the remand hearing, the man denied that the items were his possessions, claiming the luggage was something he had been carrying for another person.
The woman, too, denied that the drugs belonged to her, despite what is believed to be clothing belonging to the two of them being found in the same luggage. She further denied knowledge of drugs being in the luggage.
USD 1,751 was also discovered in the woman's handbag.
