Drug-free Maldives 'a duty' of every citizen: President Solih

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, on Saturday, declared it a responsibility for every citizen to ensure Maldives be a drug-free country.

Speaking at the official inauguration of National Drug Agency (NDA)'s Open Day 2019, President Solih stated that a drug-free Maldives should be a vision shared by the entire community.

Noting efforts against drug use as a top priority for his administration, President Solih said it would centre its policies on combatting the issue and halting all forms of drug peddling and trafficking, in addition to providing treatment and rehabilitation for addiction and abuse

During the function, the President announced the decision to develop a drug offender remand centre in Gulhifalhu, Kaafu Atoll and announced potential amendments to the Narcotics Drug Act in late 2019.

Highlighting the challenges of providing proper treatment for juvenile drug abuse and delinquency, he revealed that dedicated centres for youth will be established in the near future.

Moreover, addressing the many hurdles faced by NDA, President Solih proposed to relocate and provide better facilities at the agency in reclaimed suburb Hulhumalé, including laboratory services, a modern detox clinic, a national research institute, free counselling and a business centre.

He also unveiled the official statistics book compiled and published by NDA.

The President was ccompanied by First Lady Fazna Ahmed, Vice President Faisal Naseem, government ministers and heads of institutions.
