The Indian government granted MVR 6 million to construct a drug detoxification centre and community centre in Hulhudhoo, Seenu Atoll, announced Ministry of Foreign Affairs Monday.

The ministry stated that the aim of the project is to develop and establish drug treatment and rehabilitation services in Hulhudhoo, focusing on Addu City as a whole.

In addition to development of infrastructure, the project scope also includes developing skills and knowledge of the counsellors, social workers and other technical staff, and strengthen evidence based treatment programmes as per the international best practice.

The ministry declared that although there are a large number of clients waiting for the service, there is currently no rehabilitation facility available in Hulhudhoo, Seenu Atoll.

The grant assistance was provided from the MVR 100 million granted to Maldives during Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj’s visit in March 2019. According to the ministry, the aim of the grant assistance is to conduct high impact socio-economic development projects across the country.
