Vice President Faisal Naseem, on Thursday morning, met with officials from Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau and Singapore Prison Services as part of his working visit to Singapore.

During the meeting, VP Naseem discussed strategies to combat illicit drug trafficking, in addition to discouraging and preventing illegal drug use.

The Singaporean officials provided VP Naseem with an overview of their country’s prison rehabilitation programme. This programme prioritizes providing convicts with career-relevant skill sets and helping them find job opportunities, so that they can be reintegrated into society, granting them an opportunity to be responsible, law-abiding members once they are out of prison.

The officials also provided the Vice President with a tour of Singapore’s Drug Rehabilitation Centre, following their presentation.

Drug use among the youth has been a growing issue in Maldives for the past several decades. Illegal use of narcotics contribute to several other social challenges as well.

According to the President's Office, the current administration will be proactive in addressing the issue by improving law enforcement and rehabilitation programmes.

The President's Office further stated that the administration is assisted by the expertise and support provided by countries such as Singapore, in its aim to eradicate illegal drug use in the country.
