Approximately 746 individuals were able to obtain their driving licenses in the two days the “Ehlakin Mashah License” (license in one go) programme has been running so far, the Ministry of Economic Development has revealed.
According to the ministry, 1,394 people had registered for the programme during the weekend alone.
Applicants are able to take the driving theory and practical exams as soon as the registration process is complete, allowing them to get their driving license on the same night.
Reportedly, the exams under the programme are much easier than the previous driving exams, which were spaced out over two weeks.
When the programme first initiated Friday night, hundreds of people queued outside Huravee Building, where the transport authority had set up its registration centres.
However, shortly after the registration process began, discontent citizens began complaining of “unnecessary” and “irrelevant” questions being on the registration forms.
Some citizens took to social media to claim that state was misusing its privileges to campaign for the incumbent President Abdulla Yameen, in the presidential election slated for September.
Tuesday night is the last night the fast tracked license programme would be running in the capital Male.
The economic ministry had, however, stated that it had plans to run the “Ehlakin Mashah License” programme in the atolls as well.
