MP Musthafa calls for MP salary cuts, expense reduction

Ruling Party (PNC) MP Musthafa Hussain, representing South Mahchangolhi constituency, has urged members of parliament to reduce their salaries and set an example during the current difficult economic times.

In a social media post on platform X, Musthafa Hussain said "In this difficult time, I propose that we as parliamentarians should set an example and reduce our salaries. I am fully prepared to press the green button on this vote".

Currently, the 20th Parliament has 93 members who receive MVR 62,000 per month in salaries, along with a committee allowance of MVR 20,000 totaling to MVR 82,500. The salary increase was approved during the 19th Parliament but faced delays at the committee stage.

With the Maldives government encountering challenges in financing this year's budget, efforts are now focused on reducing expenditures. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced measures to curb government spending, including reducing political posts within the administration and scaling back or cancelling unnecessary celebratory events.

Specific steps include scaling back Independence Day celebrations this year, limiting festivities to the official function, which is expected to lead to significant reductions in state expenses.

President Muizzu also indicated that additional measures to reduce public expenditure will be announced soon.

MPs have been advocating for accelerated expenditure reductions and are urging the government to outline a clear schedule for these measures.
