High Court has scheduled an appeal hearing for former President Abdulla Yameen on Sunday.
Yamen was sentenced to 11 years in prison after he was found guilty of accepting a bribe and money laundering over the lease of Vaavu atoll Aarah during his administration. Former MP for the Felidhoo constituency Yoosuf Naeem was also found guilty of offering the bribe in this case, and sentenced to serve three years in prison.
The High Court has previously held appeal hearings submitted by both parties in the past as well. Yameen’s legal team had confirmed that the next appeal hearing will be held on Sunday.
While the High Court is nearing a decision on this case, Yameen is currently serving his sentence in his home, as per a decision made by the Correctional Services of Maldives.
The former president lost the right to run for president as well because he had an existing prison sentence.
