Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Ibrahim Thoriq revealed that a new generator has been purchased for Addu City, the southernmost atoll in the country, to resolve power failure issues across connected islands and assured that a solution for the concern will be reached in August.

In response to a question posed by a parliamentarian during today's parliament session, Minister Thoriq asserted that the Central Power Station of Addu City is in poor condition due to neglect by the opposition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s preceding administration.

He said that the former government had neither purchased additional generators required for the power station nor properly maintained existing generators during their time.

According to the Minister, connected islands in the city demands 12 megawatts of electricity during peak hours while Hithadhoo, the main administrative district in the city has 30 generators installed for electricity supply.

The total capacity of these generators are 26.8 megawatts, said the Minister, elaborating that only 14 megawatts are however produced at present due to the malfunctioning of five generators.

"There still remains issues on electricity interruption during peak hours." said the Minister.

Thoriq assured that to resolve the problem, the current administration has purchased a new generator of 1.5 megawatts, and ensured its installation within the coming month.

Spares for three more generators have also been purchased, added Thoriq, highlighting that the generators will be made functional within the next month.

Moreover, the Minister affirmed that after overhauling two failed generators of 2 megawatts, they will also resume operation within the year. He added that this is a short-term solution for the electricity problem faced by Addu.

An emergency motion was also submitted to the parliament last week over power failure in Addu, with both the opposition and ruling party members concurring on it being a matter of concern.
