The Elections Commission (EC) affirmed the leadership of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP)’s President Mohamed Nasheed and Adhaalath Party (AP)’s President  Sheikh Imran Abdulla, on Monday.

EC had previously nullified the party presidency of Nasheed and Imran under an amendment brought in 2015 to the Prisons and Parole Act 14/2013.

However, the Supreme Court issued a stay order on both convictions, following which the former president of Maldives Nasheed returned to the country on November 1 after three years in self-exile.

Both Nasheed and Imran have spent their newly earned freedom resuming their work in the political sphere.

A statement given to local media Mihaaru by EC member Ahmed Akram confirmed that the decision had been made as neither party president remained under conviction adding that henceforth EC formally acknowledges Nasheed and Imran as President of MDP and AP, respectively.

According to clause 63 of the Prisons and Parole Act, no persons currently facing imprisonment shall have the right to undertake any role of responsibility or partake in any activity, other than that of party membership, for the duration of their sentence.

Nasheed was charged with terrorism and sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment over the arbitrary arrest of former Criminal Court Judge Abdulla Mohamed during his presidency.

Sheikh Imran was found guilty of terrorism over a speech given at the May Day rally in 2015 and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
