Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid sat down with his counterparts from the Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia, on the sidelines of the Raisina Dialogue in India.

In his meetings with Tomáš Petříček from the Czech Republic and Edgars Rinkēvičs from Latvia on Tuesday, Minister Shahid discussed the development of closer bilateral relations with the European Union and its member countries, including economic ties and people-to-people contact. In this regard, Minister Shahid reiterated the request for easier visa facilitation for Maldivians travelling from to EU nations.

The minister met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, on Wednesday. The two diplomats spoke of the recent developments in bilateral ties between the two countries, in the areas of fisheries, health and tourism.

Additionally, the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Patricia Scotland, called on Minister Shahid as well. He thanked the SG for expediting Maldives' bid to rejoin the Commonwealth and discussed procedures in going forward. The Commonwealth had informed the Maldivian government last December that member states did not object to the re-admission of Maldives, and invited the island nation to submit its formal membership application.

The foreign minister is in New Delhi to attend the 2020 edition of the Raisina Dialogue. He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Wednesday afternoon.
