Ministry of Home Affairs, on Sunday, confirmed that the operation conducted to inspect Maafushi Prison for dangerous hidden objects was successfully completed.

According to the Home Ministry's tweet, any prohibited items found during the inspection were confiscated by Maldives Correctional Service (MCS).

Commissioner of Prisons Abdulla Munaz revealed that the inspection resulted in the confiscation of eight mobile phones, and a sharpened object improvised from metal rods which could potentially be utilised as a weapon.

The operation was overseen by Commissioner Munaz, Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Ibrahim Mohamed Didi and Inspector of Correctional Service Ahmed Mohamed.

Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla requested MCS to carry out an inspection following the unrest which occurred within the prison on Thursday.

Reportedly, the situation arose when some inmates assaulted the officer on duty with a metal bar after he refused to bring them an object from another cell as they had requested.

In response, five inmates were allegedly taken out from two cells, handcuffed, forced to the ground, pepper sprayed and beaten with batons.

MCS officially denied that such inhumane actions were committed.

Home Minister Imran publicly declared that the actions of MCS officers constituted an excessive and disproportionate level of force and guaranteed amendments to prison regulations to prevent a repetition of such events.

The Home Ministry stated that the internal situation in Maafushi Prison was yet to return to normal after Thursday's events and that there were certain obstacles to resuming and maintaining routine operations in the prison.
