The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) revealed today that 115 cases related to the Maldives Media and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) fraud have been concluded, and that both the Attorney General's Office (AG Office) and MMPRC were ordered to recover MVR 640 million in connection to these cases.

The revelation was made during the parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions meeting held today, when ACC members were asked about the case.

ACC's Vice President Abdul Salam said that the commission took on 116 cases involving MVR 948 million, all related to the MMPRC fraud case. Out of these, 115 cases have been concluded and the state was ordered to recover MVR 640 million, he said.

However, lawsuits have not been filed to reclaim the funds, he added.

He went on to explain that ACC does not have the legal authority to sue and recover funds, which is why both MMPRC and the AG Office were notified to proceed with the legal process multiple times.

This whole time was spent debating whether it should be MMPRC or the Attorney General's Office to file the lawsuits, he also said.

However, he also revealed that MMPRC has now decided that it would sue to recover the funds and that ACC will be sitting down with the corporation to discuss the matter.

Salam also said that the problem of state agencies not recovering funds ordered to be recovered by ACC is very serious. As such, the commission has decided to take action against such agencies, and will be made public, he said.
