Maldives celebrated its millionth visitor this year on Thursday.
Supata Amornvivat, a Thai national who arrived in the Maldives on AirAsia flight FD 175 on Thursday morning, has become the one millionth tourist to arrive in the Maldives this year.
The 37 year old mother, who is visiting the island nation for the first time since her honeymoon back in 2011, landed at Velana International Airport with her two children and husband with plans to spend their holiday at Niyama Private Island Maldives.
They were greeted by Minister of Tourism Ibrahim Faisal and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) Ibrahim Shiuree.
With the honour of becoming the millionth visitor this year, Amornvivat was gifted a five day holiday at Siyam World Resort.
Last year Maldives celebrated its millionth visitor on 16th July. This means tourist arrivals have been higher so far this year with the milestone being reached about 17 days earlier.
According to figures, inbound tourist rates are up by 10 percent this year, with an average of 4,000 tourists entering the country on the daily.
The highest market share of Maldives' tourism is held by China this year, with the country contributing over 115,000 arrivals. Russia comes in second with about 100,000 tourists while the UK comes in third with about 90,000 visitors.
The Maldivian government is working towards achieving a goal of two million tourists into the country this year.
