COVID-19 deaths in May; 64 percent unvaccinated

Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to the Health Ministry has said 64 percent of the deaths so far in May had not gotten any doses of the vaccine, on Wednesday evening.

The only Pediatric Infectious Control Expert Dr. Nazla Musthafa said they consider that an individual is fully vaccinated once two weeks pass since their second dose.

On that basis, out of the 39 people that died in May by then, 64 percent had not received any dose of the vaccine, while for 20 percent of people, two weeks had passed since they received the first dose. Only 12 percent had received both doses of the vaccine.

Maldives recorded its first COVID related death on April 29, 2020.

Even though it has been a year since community spread in Maldives, Wednesday was the day with the highest number of deaths within a 24 hour period so far with seven fatalities.

Dr. Nazla added that 35 percent of the people admitted in the ICU's currently are under 40 years old.

"Even if younger people get sick, they might have to face long term symptoms as well," she said.

So far 60 percent of Greater Male' Area has received the vaccine. Although 304,394 people have received both vaccines, only 149,435 people have received two doses within Maldives.
