Iranian President-elect Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian was inaugurated as President, with Vice President of the Maldives, Hussain Mohamed Latheef, attending the ceremony yesterday.

Following the swearing-in ceremony at the Islamic Consultative Assembly in Tehran, the Vice President posed for a photograph with the new Iranian President and other dignitaries present.

This marks the first visit by a Maldivian Vice President to Iran in recent times.

Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian was elected President following the death of former President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash on May 19th.

Masoud secured his presidency in the second round of elections, competing against six candidates. He received 53.7 percent of the votes, while his closest competitor, Saeed Jalili, garnered 44.3 percent.

The Maldives officially severed diplomatic ties with Iran on May 17, 2016. The Foreign Ministry announced that the diplomatic relations, established on June 2, 1975, were cut due to Iran's disruption of peace and stability in the Arabian Gulf region.

However, after a seven-year break, the Maldives and Iran restored political relations on March 10, 2023.
