President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu stepped down from his role as Mayor of Malé City today in preparation for his inauguration as the eighth President of the Maldives.
After resigning as Mayor, the President-elect expressed sincere gratitude to all the councilors, leaders, and employees of the City Council in a post on X, acknowledging their full support and hard work.
"I express my gratitude to the people of Malé City for electing me as Mayor and for their unwavering support and cooperation during my tenure. With a strong resolve, I am committed to realizing the aspirations of the people of Malé City, and, God willing, turn them into a reality," the post read.
Following his landslide victory in the presidential election, Dr. Muizzu stepped down from his mayoral duties on November 4 to oversee the transitional process. He handed over the key responsibilities of the council to Deputy Mayor Ahmed Naresh.
Dr. Muizzu assumed the role of Mayor of Malé City on May 17, 2021.
The swearing-in ceremony for President-elect Muizzu and Vice President-elect Hussain Mohamed Latheef is scheduled at 4:30 p.m. this evening. The Parliament has indicated that over 3,000 people are expected to attend the ceremony.
