Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Special Envoy and State Councilor Shen Yiqin will visit the Maldives to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Friday, November 17.
Special Envoy and State Councilor Shen Yiqin will arrive in the Maldives on Wednesday, November 15, as reported by Chinese state media CGTN, citing the country's Foreign Ministry.
The Special Envoy's visit will include a meeting with President-elect Dr. Muizzu and attendance at the swearing-in ceremony, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry added that the special envoy will visit Sri Lanka on Saturday, November 18, after completing her four-day visit to the Maldives.
During Dr. Muizzu's tenure as Housing Minister, the Maldives maintained close relations with China during former President Abdulla Yameen's administration. The Sinamalé Bridge connecting Malé and Hulhumalé is a symbol of the close ties between the Chinese government and the Maldives.
Chinese President Xi Jinping also visited the Maldives during Yameen's presidency.
The President-elect's Office had earlier stated that invitations for the swearing-in ceremony had been sent to the heads of all countries in the region and other countries with close ties to the Maldives.
