President-elect Dr. Mohamed Muizzu requests local entrepreneurs to support and back female MPs for the upcoming parliamentary election scheduled for early 2024.
Dr. Muizzu expressed his wish for Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition to contend for 20 percent of the parliament's seats.
The President-elect, who is expected to take official oath of office on November 17, said he wished to achieve the target inclusive of as many female MPs running for the seats as possible.
He made these remarks during a special function organized by the Maldives National Association of Construction Industry (MNACI) on Sunday evening, October 29. The event was attended by several notable entrepreneurs in the Maldives.
During the event, Dr. Muizzu urged entrepreneurs to endorse and provide financial support for female MPs to run in at least 19 out of the total 93 constituencies. He said that this effort would be a significant service to the country.
"Such meaningful assistance will help with the nation's progress, prosperity and achievement of aspirations," Dr. Muizzu said during the event held at JEN Maldives by Shangri-La.
At the event, Dr. Muizzu said it was futile to repeat the same statements without seeking progress. He strongly advocated on electing female MPs to the the parliament, highlighting that legislative responsibilities are not exclusive to men.
"We need to encourage this, given there are barriers. Equality is observed in documents, but we need to make an actual stand to ensure this equality is realized, and we need to endorse this," the President-elect said.
Out of the 87 MPs in the current 19th parliamentary session, only four are female parliamentarians.
