Education Ministry has stated that the next step to address the damage to Izzuddin School building will be decided after reviewing the results of the safety survey. They said that no decision have been made on whether students will transfer to another school.
Ministry of Education stated today that the next course of action to address the large crack discovered on part of the Izzuddin School building's third floor will be determined after conducting the safety assessments.
The Ministry initiated efforts to conduct surveys into the safety and security of students this week following the discovery, after which school hours were also shortened.
Some parents have started expressing concerns that the school may close down due to the potential dangers students studying at the damaged school building may be exposed to.
A senior official of the Ministry of Education stated today that no decisions have been reached as of yet regarding the closure of the school or the transfer of students to another school. The Ministry has also affirmed that a decision to address the issue will be made after reviewing the results of the assessment.
However, some parents have alleged that the government intends to shut down the school and transfer its students to Dharumavantha School. They claim that the Ministry had met with some parents of Dharumavantha School last night and informed them about this. Parents of Izzuddin School also allege that the government plans to transfer Izzuddin School students to Dharumavantha and begin two sessions.
However, the official has denied these allegations, stating that no meetings were held with parents last nights and that these rumors are baseless.
A parent who attended the meeting also spoke with Mihaaru News and revealed that the ministry's team said that using the building, which was used as the Malé English School (MES) 30 years ago, is not safe right now.
Parents who attended the meeting said that the principal confirmed that two teams visited the site and declared the building unsafe for students.
However, the biggest concern of parents is that such an issue has come up just shortly after the new academic year commenced.
As of right now, the school and Education Ministry's plan is to hold a series of meetings with the school's parents, with the first meeting held on Thursday. According to the parents, Education Ministry informed them that the assessment report will be available after the upcoming Eid holidays.
Izzuddin School is the first school in Malé that started teaching students in a single session. While the school started teaching 10th grade students this year, the entire student population is over 600 as of right now.
