Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has called to cease influencing the Supreme Court return to upholding the constitution.

In a post on X, Solih said that while a constitutional case is pending in the Supreme Court, political pressure is being exerted, undermining the independence of institutions and intimidating judges.

He called to cease these practices and restore the rule of law.

The former President's statement follows the suspension of Supreme Court judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Husnu Su'ood by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) shortly after Parliament passed the Judicature Amendment Bill, mandating reducing the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five.

JSC has since initiated investigations into disciplinary cases of the judges.

The amendment passed while the Supreme Court was hearing a case challenging a constitutional change that would strip parliamentarians of their seats if they leave or are expelled from the political parties that they were elected from.

The three judges were suspended at an emergency meeting convened by the JSC just before the hearing was set to take place.

Former President Solih warned that the country is heading toward dictatorship, with the separation of powers and the hard-earned rights of citizens being eroded to consolidate power in the hands of the president.

“The bitter consequences will be borne by the common folk,” he said.
