Mass prayers halted in greater Male', resorts over COVID-19

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Ahmed Zahir on Wednesday announced the decision to suspend mass prayers in mosques located in greater Male' region and resorts as a measure to contain the COVID-19 outbreak in the country.

Speaking at a press conference, the Islamic minister stated that the motion will come into effect starting from afternoon prayers on Wednesday, March 18for a period of ten days.

Furthermore, should any other island be placed under lockdown, the minister added that mass prayers will be suspended there as well.

Although mass prayers are halted, for the time being, mosques will remain open and calls for prayers will be made.

Dr Zahir also noted that this decision was made after consulting with local religious scholars and members of the Fatwa Council.

He stressed on the importance given to public health and safety in Islam and assured that the ministry will take all the necessary precautions.

The ministry previously cautioned individuals to not attend the mosque if an individual exhibited symptoms for COVID-19.

To date, 13 people in Maldives have confirmed cases for COVID-19.
