The parliamentary subcommittee on National Security Services declared that it will counsel the main committee to take action against organisations that support extremist ideologies.

The subcommittee announced its decision after reviewing the report on the murder of former Ungoofaaru MP and religious scholar, Dr Afrasheem Ali, which was compiled by the presidential Commission on Investigation of Murders and Enforced Disappearances.

In its report, the subcommittee stated that it will advise the main Committee on National Security Services to take action against the parties identified in Dr Afrasheem's murder report as supporters of terrorist ideologies, including the NGO Jamiyyath Salaf, Mohamed Ameen, Mohamed Mazeedh, Jaufar Faiz, Shaamil, Muhusin, and Ali Shiyam (VB Ayya).

Ameen is the first Maldivian listed as a terrorist by the United States' Department of the Treasuries Office of Foreign Affairs Control (OFAC), while Mazeedh leads a local organisation affiliated with al-Qaeda. VB Ayya is accused of providing funds to send Maldivian insurgents to fight in the Syrian civil war.

In addition to taking action, the subcommittee underscored the importance of determining their current whereabouts and activities. The subcommittee also stated it will reach out to relevant authorities to find out the details of the financial transactions connected with Dr Afrasheem's murder, via Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

Furthermore, the subcommittee intends to request, via Ministry of Defence, the dates on which some of the suspects implicated in Dr Afrasheem's murder fled Maldives, the details of border control staff who were on duty on those dates, as well as the individuals who allowed them to leave the country.

The lawmakers sitting on the subcommittee on national security services are Henveiru West MP Hassan Latheef of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Maduvvari MP Adam Shareef of opposition People's National Congress (PNS), and independent MP for Faresmaathodaa constituency Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
