Minister of Construction and Infrastructure Dr Abdulla Muththalib has stated that once the Thilamale' Bridge construction site at the Industrial zone is removed, development of the area will commence.

Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), which currently oversees the Industrial Zone, earlier announced that parking slots are to be leased from the area. This announcement received criticism from many.

Minister Muththalib responded to queries from Mihaaru News who enquired about the zone not being utilized for the purpose it was initially intended for.

He confirmed that this government, too, plans to relocate warehouses in Male' to this area.

However, as much of the area is currently being used for the work on the ThilaMale' Bridge, he said that until that work is completed, it would be difficult to bring major changes to the area.

"There aren't any major changes to the plan. Our intention is to develop the area once this work is completed," Muththalib said.

The area was reclaimed during the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen, with now President and then Minister Dr Mohamed Muizzu having led the efforts. The area was intended to be used for all industrial work in Male', and to relocate all warehouses and garages to.

The plan then was to lease land from the zone to State Owned Enterprises and private businesses to run garages, large warehouses, chemical warehouses, and timber warehouses.

The zone remained undeveloped after former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih assumed office.

The Industrial Zone currently has a large part of it allocated to AFCONS who is developing the ThilaMale' Bridge, and also houses a WAMCO site.
