Underwater photo contest to be held on October 21

An underwater photo contest will be held to celebrate the golden jubilee of tourism in the Maldives.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Ocean Geographic Society and local telecommunication provider; Dhiraagu.

Tourism Minister Dr. Abdulla Mausoom attending the partners signing ceremony held on October 10 said one of the major reasons that tourists visit the Maldives is to view its beautiful reefs. Therefore, it is important to pay more attention to the health of the marine environment and work towards its conservation.

Minister Mausoom said that photo contest would encourage marine conservation.

Dhiraagu CEO and MD Ismail Rasheed said that protecting the environment and the oceans is one of the main pillars of the company's CSR. The photo contest will boost to environmental protection efforts, in addition to showcasing the different marine life in the Maldives, he said.

The aim of the photo contest, which will be held on October 21, is initiated to check the health of the country's reefs and conduct an annual checkup.

According to Dhiraagu, 50 famous dive sites in Maldives have been selected for the competition. Participants can take photos of one or more of these sites to enter the contest. Participants are required to submit a portfolio of five photographs from each dive site selected.

The photographs submitted for the competition will be reviewed by an international judging panel, and the first, second and third place winners will be selected in addition to honorable mentions chosen from each dive site. All photo submissions will be awarded a certificate of participation in the Maldives Coral Reef Health Assessment.

The results for the photo contest will be announced on October 29.
