A special clinic for senior citizens of Maldives has been formally introduced, allowing the elderly to draft memos from the comfort of their homes as opposed to physically visiting the hospital.

This clinic was opened this morning in IGMH (Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital).

At the ceremony held to launch the service, Health Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel said that this clinic is the realization of the dreams of senior citizen for decades.

He said that with this clinic, more work will begin to maintain the good health of the elderly.

Despite the clinic opening at IGMH at first, the Minister stated that they will set out to extend this service to all corners of Maldives.

“Even right now, we are considering the next location where we can set up a clinic like this most efficiently and conveniently,” said Khaleel.

The minister added there are individuals pursuing education in the specialized care for the elderly and that the ministry is looking for ways to provide these education opportunities to those seeking it.

“Some members of the ministry have taken the initiative and contacted [neighboring countries] even now. Working to provide this opportunity, they have been speaking with educational institutes in these countries to provide educational opportunities from institutions specializing in personal care to senior citizens (Geriatric care)," Khaleel said.

He says that this is a brand-new specialization within the Maldives and that the service will expand across the country.

In addition to specialized clinics for senior citizens, the state has decided to build special social centers for the elderly in different regions of the country.
