Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital has begun providing chemotherapy services officially on Sunday, May 07.

The hospital’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer Abdul Azeez Rifaau inaugurated the service at a special ceremony held on Sunday.

While the number of cancer patients in the Maldives is increasing, the introduction of chemotherapy services in Huvadhoo Atoll will help reduce the medical expenses incurred by the families of these patients.

The hospital is currently providing training to its doctors and nurses in order to equip them with the necessary skills to offer chemotherapy services, with support from Hulhumalé Hospital. Additionally, the hospital has been in discussions with State Trading Organization (STO) to explore options for expanding the enterprise’s involvement in sustaining chemotherapy services in the atoll.

The Dr. Abdul Samad Memorial Hospital introduced Laparoscopic Surgery and Advance Wound Care services last week in addition to the chemotherapy services that were recently introduced.

Besides the hospitals in the Greater Malé region and the newly introduced services in Thinadhoo, some major regional hospitals, as well as the Lhaviyani Atoll Hospital in Naifaru, already provide chemotherapy services.

The Maldives government has announced plans to develop a hospital specializing in cancer treatment, following a significant increase in cancer patients in recent years. The hospital is being built in Laamu Atoll and, upon completion, will provide comprehensive cancer therapy services, reducing the need for locals to travel abroad for treatment.

Though the hospital’s plan has been announced, its official works are yet to be commenced.
