The government has today introduced National Identity Card services, including printing of physical cards, in Gaafu Alif Vilin'gili.
This is the first time that the service is being provided in an island besides capital Male' city.
A special ceremony was held in Vilin'gili today to inaugurate the services, attended by Minister of Home Affairs Ali Ihusaan.
Previously, ID cards could be applied for via Island Councils. In 2022, these services were further streamlined, allowing applications via a special portal of the Department of National Registration, where they courier the printed cards to the applicant's location.
DNR also said earlier this year that they are working on arranging for issuing cards without expiry dates for senior citizens over the age of 65.
ID cards issued to those between the age of 10 and 40 years are valid for five years, while those issued to persons above 40 years of age have a ten year expiration period.
