During the first quarter of this year, the police have investigated over 50 cases of domestic violence. However, according to police statistics, none of these cases have been sent for prosecution.
According to crime statistics released by the Maldives Police Service on Saturday, May 20, a total of 146 cases of domestic violence were reported to the police in the first three months 2023, from which 13 cases were filed and 57 cases were investigated.
Two individuals were arrested in connection with these cases.
According to the Police, 29 cases being investigated involve family members, while 28 cases involve individuals in marital relationships.
The average age the alleged abusers is between 35 to 39 years, out of which nine individuals were alleged as having harmed others.
Police statistics reveal that a significant number of children were among the victims of domestic violence, with 12 girls and 12 boys being affected. Additionally, 14 women and one man were identified as victims of domestic violence.
Malé City recorded the highest number of cases of domestic violence, with 32 incidents being reported. In addition, two cases were reported from Addu City and one case from Fuvahmulah.
Additionally, the police received a total of 119 cases of sexual offenses during the first three months of 2023. Of these, 69 cases were accepted by the police for investigation. These include 36 cases of sexual abuse of children, five cases of prostitution, six cases of sexual harassment, and 22 other cases.
