Man sentenced to jail on Monday for violating restraining order for intimidating his mother and damaging property.

He received a jail sentence of six months for violating the order issued to him under the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. The Family Court had ordered him not to intimidate his mother psychologically, nor to force his mother into any situation, in addition to ordering him from not damaging his mother's property and goods.

However the man had violated the order in January, breaking the window of her house with a stone, as well as shouting at her from the road in the middle of the night. The Criminal Court agrees with the charges pressed against the man by the state regarding the violation.

Criminal Court's order states that as the man has confessed to the crime, he will receive the maximum sentence one can receive in these kind of crimes. However, once the time he had already spent in jail has been deducted from his sentence, he will remain in custody for four months and 18 days.

Violation of a domestic violence protection order is punishable by six months in prison or MVR 15,000.
