A Maldivian man has been arrested for allegedly carrying fraudulent currency notes.
The court order made on Friday to arrest Abdulla Ashraf, 38, from Thaa atoll Thimarafushi, said that he was arrested after being accused of committing multiple crimes. He was to ordered to be detained for seven additional days.
According to the court order, his detention period was extended after evidence supporting possession of fake currency notes was submitted to the court. Therefore, it was determined that he is a danger to society and was detained.
Recently, posts have been made on social media of people allegedly selling fraudulent US Dollars. The posts made on Telegram groups, a popular messaging application, advertising sale of these fake notes state that these notes appear extremely authentic. They claim that ATMs do not catch them as fake as well. However, it is unclear whether Ashraf was arrested in connection to such Telegram groups.
Police have not disclosed additional details regarding this case.
